Alpaca Coffee Joins the SME Climate Hub

We’ve taken another great, green step on our Sustainability Roadmap at Alpaca Coffee after joining the SME Climate Hub!

Along with thousands of other UK businesses, we’re committed to reducing our greenhouse gas emissions by at least half by 2030, and reach net-zero by 2050. Of course, Alpaca Coffee’s emissions aren’t even close to some (cough cough), but we take any opportunity we can to help lead the coffee industry towards a brighter future.

So what is the SME Climate Hub anyway? It’s an initiative founded by the International Chamber of Commerce, the Exponential Roadmap Initiative, the We Mean Business Coalition and the United Nations Race to Zero campaign. Aka, it’s a pretty big deal. Their aim is to support small and medium-sized businesses in cutting greenhouse emissions and building a better future for themselves and the planet - sound familiar? A whole load of tools and incentives have been provided too, all with the aim of helping businesses do the following:

  • Gain a competitive advantage
  • Improve efficiency and reduce costs
  • Manage business risk
  • Enhance access to capital and affordable insurance
  • Grow business and brand

So if you’re interested, you can join us by signing up here.

Most importantly, WHY are we doing this? Greenhouse gases are the main contributor to the climate crisis we all find ourselves living in, and if we can cut those globally in half by 2030, we can stop global temperatures rising by over 1.5°C. This may not seem like much, in fact you may remember that the 2015 Paris Agreement required global temperatures to rise by no more than 2°C. That was until a report published by the IPCC [https://www.ipcc.ch/] in 2018 told us a global rise above 1.5°C would lead to an unlivable future. In real terms, the difference between temperatures rising from 1.5°C to 2°C would mean no more coral reefs, the Arctic experiencing an ice-free summer every 10 years and 50% more people finding themselves in climate-related poverty.

The time to act is now and Alpaca Coffee is committed to saving our planet. You can find out more about the importance of reducing our emissions by 2030 in this incredible (9 minute!) documentary by Earthrise Studios.
